Lazing on a Sunday afternoon...

On a glorious day like today, what better way to spend it than relaxing. It's been a quiet weekend for me (which makes a change!) so I've shopped, walked and eaten to my hearts content.
I picked up this gorgeous necklace from Matalan (who constantly surprise me with their ranges - some stunning bits) Taking inspiration from Jen of A Little Bird Told Me who loves a statement necklace, I'll be pairing this with a crisp collar and jumper combo. Do you like it?

We took the dogs out for a lovely walk; Percie is getting so big now! He's such a good boy, and Holly, as always is the perfect pooch. There are some lovely walks near us so it's great to take advantage.

The day has been finished with shepherds pie, and a tray of roasted vegetables - and of course a glass of red. Well what's a Sunday without a treat or two.

Three Cheers for Beer!

Not only is it lovely to drink, it's a great rinse for your hair.

Beer can help revive flat and dull hair and has been used as an alternative conditioner for years now. Containing vitamin B and proteins it can leave hair with great shine - and not a hangover in sight.

The type of beer doesn't matter, as long as it's flat. Giving your hair a beer rinse once a month is a great natural boost, and those hops can help strengthen keratin along with adding body. The only downside, you might end up smelling like you've fallen asleep in the drip tray at your local pub. But fear not! This can be easily avoided by adding a few drops of essential oil (whichever takes your fancy, I like lavender)

I tried it out (much to Andy's dismay - "Your wasting beer on your hair?!! Are you mad?!") and found it definitely gave my hair more of a shine, and it felt cleaner (you know that squeaky clean feel) I was concerned it may leave my hair feeling slightly greasy or flat but it gave it a beertastic boost! I think next time I'm going to add a few drops of cider vinegar - which can help remove residual build up and smooth cuticles. Which is great for all your product junkies out there!

BAFTA Barnets...

What did we all think of the BAFTA's?

The Artist swept the board with seven awards, Meryl lost a shoe (that women is incredible - and Colin Firth what a gent!) and of course, there was some beautiful hairstyles on the red carpet. So lets take a look...

Melissa George, Emilia Fox and Fearne Cotton took a step back to the 20's with their take on 'era hair' I think Melissa looks stunning, and paired with the dark smokey eye she really gave a dramatic screen siren look. I think Fearne's dishevelled waves look great against her glamorous frock.

The 'shorties' gave excellent red carpet hair. Michelle Williams (who carried an amazing clutch bag- inspired by Marilyn no doubt!) looked fantastic with her crop. Tilda Swinton gave us great texture with her rockabilly quiff. And Emma Watson, whose wet-look hair gave the illusion of a short crop, but tucked low on her neck was a cute chignon. Perfect styling for those growing out a short style. How amazingly gorgeous does she look?!

Up do's are generally a surefire hit on the red carpet, Meryl Streep looked gorgeous with her casual yet structured up do. Perfectly swept away from the face to highlight her features. I pray to look that good in my 60's! Gillian Anderson followed suit with another relaxed up do - the 'messy' up do works so well against the pretty floor-sweeping dresses. Penelope Cruz looked 50's cute with a fringe and high ponytail. I thought her look was very Audrey Hepburn, the fringe especially. And I loved the piece of hair wrapped around the ponytail to hide the band. Top marks!

Hair History: Victoria Beckham

After seeing the most recent pictures of Mrs B, I thought it only right to showcase her hairstory over the years. She's definitely tried a few different looks. So follow me down a long-winding road of Spice Girls, babies and Goldenballs.
Victoria had the LBD and the bob, standing out from Ginger and Scary, and dubbed 'Posh Spice' It's amazing to see how much she has changed over the years.

We had the 'Spanish' influence when Becks played for Real Madrid, long curls and heavily highlighted hair. I think this is my least favourite Posh look. This defined the look of the 'wag' and I'm glad Victoria moved away from feeling the need to have a giant mane of hair.

We've seen some dramatic up do's, with hair tight and the lengths given a ribbon effect. Gorgeous styles, but I do prefer a slightly less 'done' look to balance the immaculate outfits we've come to expect from Victoria.

In 2006, Victoria's now infamous 'pob' haircut had thousands flocking to salons clutching a picture and wanting the sharp graduated bob cut. Definitely in the hair hall of fame alongside 'The Rachel'. The colour looked beautiful on Victoria and her hair looked in great condition.

She's dabbled with colour over the years, from some honey highlights to a full-blown peroxide dip when they moved over to the US. I actually can't believe how different Victoria looks, and whilst I quite like the redefined 'pob' on the left, I prefer a brunette look.

I love Victoria's hair short, I feel it really gives her a chic look and shows off her features. She originally went short in 1999, then returned to this look in 2008. She got a great reaction when she first showcased an Audrey Hepburn style crop.

At the moment Victoria has gone for a longer look, with shaggy layers and a fringe which I think looks great, one thing you can say about Victoria, she's not afraid of going short or leaving lengths long.

I know, I know, you're thinking "great another Valentines Day post full of pink & red stuff, covered in lips" But with some fabulous fascinators and hair accessories you can romance your hair thanks to some gorgeous items from Etsy...
I love this cute headband and you can get a number of different messages so you can let your hair do the talking. Headbands are a great accessory to wear this Spring, and you can cheat volume by teasing hair on the crown to give the illusion of a beehive.

How gorgeous is this tattoo style comb, it would look great pushed into piled up curls with a shock of red lippie and some winged black eyeliner...

This beautiful 'Sailor Jerry' inspired fascinator would be a great finishing touch to your hair. You can get other designs which as just as stunning. I'm loving the LUCKY style, complete with dice!

And finally, this candy pink holographic heart and net fascinator will look cute and give you that 'vintage' look with a peekaboo net. I love the modern touch with the holographic fabric, think it would definitely get admirers.

You can be a bobbed beauty one minute, then rock a Rapunzel look the next. Incredibly versatile and becoming more popular thanks to the designs and colours developing, a wig or hairpiece is no longer something only Donald Trump would wear. I'm a big fan of wigs and hairpieces, anything that can give you a great new look, or just a renewed blast of confidence is OK with me, I have a variety of clip in extensions, wigs and hairpieces ready to add if I fancy a change.

Some of the best on the market have a good selection of items, and all at different price ranges. I've picked three of my favourites for price and range.

Annabelle's Wigs offer a huge selection of wigs, hairpieces and accessories to help you completely change your look, or just add a little something to it. The 3/4 wigs are amazing, they look and feel great! Has to be the easiest way to style your hair. Great colour range and good value, I'm a big fan.

Beauty Works have an extensive range of extensions, wigs and accessories. I love their fishtail braids, the perfect option if you struggle styling your hair. The clip in bows are also really sweet, perfect look for Spring.

Wonderland Wigs have a fabulous array of styles, in a range of colours. You can get colourful extensions for a splash of colour, or if you fancy trying out a new length they have short and long styles to suit. The colourful and cosplay ranges are amazing, love the purple long wig with fringe, Katy Perry eat your heart out.

Top Trends for your Tresses!

Watching models work their way down the catwalk with some amazing styles, it's hard to imagine some making the leap to the humble high street. The four main trends emerging are embellished up do's, the big-blow out, wet-look hair and the simple but always cool ponytail. With a hint of retro styling thrown in for good measure thanks to The Artist.

So what works for you?

Adorn & Embellish your up do's...
Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent and Jason Wu incorporated pearls, cage barrettes and feathers all giving an up do an incredible twist. Whilst accessories last season were super-sized, this time they are more a part of the hair. This look is so easy to recreate, and can be left to the wearer on what they decide to choose. Metal accessories toughen up a chic bun, whilst pearls are a great addition to romanticize the hair - and is a nod to the underwater/mermaid trend seen on the catwalk.

The Big-Blow out...
Luxe, glam and definitely gives that 'ladies who lunch' look. This is a show-stopping style that gives the wearer bounce and volume Cheryl Cole would be envious of. This works well on ladies with long hair, but most face shapes can pull off the look. Chloe and Versace models glided down the catwalk with hair that gleamed. Using a round brush for a boost to the roots (lifting up and away from the head) and a volume-boosting mousse will give you super-style.

Working the wet-look...
I pondered the wet-look trend last week, it's a thin-line between looking great and um, looking like you've been caught in a storm. I love the look with dry ends to give a balance between the slick, shiny top and matte, textured ends. Chanel and Alexander Wang sent wet-look hair down the catwalk and it's been spotted on Keira Knightley, Heidi Klum and Megan Fox to name a few!

The not so Simple Ponytail

A ponytail isn't just a simple style to get your hair out of your face. It's become a catwalk staple the past few seasons and it's clear to see why. It's so versatile. From defined sections, to clipping the mid-lengths to the head you have a whole variety of options ready to try. Ponytails have featured heavily on models hair for shows from David Koma, Calvin Klein, and Marc Jacobs. This is one trend that has staying power.
My favourite is definitely the embellished up do, I think adding silver and gold barrette clips will give a cool futuristic feel, you could even weave in some foil for a slice of textured metal in the hair.

John Frieda are California Dreamin'...

The super-styling folk at John Frieda want us to be able to create salon styles at home. If you head over to their YouTube channel you'll find handy hints, advice and tutorials, this tutorial for California Waves caught my eye. I'm always on the look out for that perfect casual style.

I tried out this wavy style for work today, it may be cold but I can dream I'm on the beach with my waves catching the warm breeze. :) As I had about an hour to get ready this shows just how relaxed a look this is. I adore the smell of the Dream Curls Styling Spray and the Secret Agent Perfecting Cream left my hair feeling smooth and gave great shine. I used the Volume Refresher during the day to boost my hair, and whilst I'm not overly keen on the smell the result is worth it, it gives hair a definite pick me up, a mini handbag size would be fab John Frieda! What do you think of my carefree style? (excuse the B&W pics again, getting my roots done tonight - thank heavens!)

Trend Prediction: The Roaring 20's with a Twist!

Get ready to foxtrot back in time, where the hair was sharp and styled and finger waves ruled.

Thanks to The Artist, and later this year, The Great Gatsby remake, we are seeing a resurgence of 'era styling' and I can't wait. The structure and defined look worked well on short hair, and Louise Brooks made sure the bob was the style to be seen with.

I can imagine more of a distressed take on the trend, the waves will be sharp but then the perfect balance will be pastel coloured curls, with lots of texture and movement. Faux bob's give you the look without the commitment, and are easy to do (more so with curls as it can hide pins easier) I'd love to see a punk influence, would be a great combination of two era's, and you have the sharp styling combined with a tougher street edge. That with some added colour for a feminine twist would work well. So my style inspiration will be Louise Brooks/Debbie Harry - with a hint of some sharp studs to work a fierce look. I popped some in my style to add a little something.

To fringe or not to fringe? That is the question!

Kim Kardashian was spotted New Years eve sporting a heavy fringe. But a few days later it had gone.

The case of the disappearing fringe!

So had Kim had second thoughts about cutting in a fringe (we've all done it) and pinned it out the way? Or had she faked it using a clip in fringe (which for some reason always make me think of a merkin)

I am a huge fan of hair pieces and accessories to help boost what god gave you. As long as they are sourced in an ethical way and don't get cost the earth what's the harm in making more of your hair. There are plenty of places to pick up a clip in fringe if you fancy a change, I picked mine up from Ebay (link to seller) it arrived quickly, didn't cost the earth and there was a brilliant range of colours. What do you think?

Review: Aussie Miracle Moist Shampoo & Conditioner

With it's jumbo bottles and promise of giving frazzled hair a bit of moisture to help it back to it's best, Aussie Miracle Moist is really 'bigging' itself up! Does it live up to its promise and give hair a thirst-quenching boost?

The larger bottles are available in 500ml for the shampoo and 400ml for the conditioner, in a variety of the ranges on shelves. Regular size bottles are around £3.99 which means with the bigger bottles you get twice at much for less money.
I have definitely noticed added shine with my hair, along with more manageability. It has a great smell, with Australian Macadamia nut oil you'd expect nothing less. And with the added bonus of Aloe Vera in the mix it gives your hair a real treat.

I'm a big fan of the Aussie products, but had stuck to the Colour Mate range (the serum is brilliant!) However Miracle Moist has helped my hair regain some of it's stretch and I do feel I suffer less shedding and breakage. It lathers really well and the conditioner is thick and doesn't leave hair feeling heavy. I would recommend this product for people with dry hair that is in need of moisture. If you suffer from greasy hair then this isn't for you.
The bottles are usually priced around £5.99, and I got my math head on to work out a price-per-wash value for money for you;

£5.99 ÷ 55 (washes from bottle of shampoo) = 11p a wash! Not bad at all!

(I have estimated the end result from what's left in my bottles, it could go on for longer!)

Red Carpet Watch: NTA's

An array of celebs sashayed down the red carpet to laugh, cry and celebrate the National Television Awards last night. TOWIE were there, along with all the television glitterati. So what were they wearing? Who won? Both questions that pale into insignificance when you are reading my blog. :) How did they style their hair?
The formal dress code brings out the glamourous siren look for Karen Hassan and Karen Gillan. I love Karen Hassan's vintage style curls, and Karen Gillan's smooth blowdry looks so full of life.

Elle Macpherson had a high-lifting ponytail finished with a braided section around the band. Ultra-fierce! And perfect for showing off her great features.

Celebs with shorter hair showed off some on-trend styling. Fearne Cotton worked wet-look hair with a deep side parting, whilst Kerry Katona's hair was styled into a beautiful wave at the front adding interest to her short crop. I can't believe I am saying this, but she looked great. What do you think?

Caroline Flack added those extensions back in, after being pictured earlier in the day with a shorter do. I wish she'd shown off the new look, whilst I love the textured finish to the hair I feel it lack a bit in the red carpet stakes.

Tulisa always gives dramatic hair-up. Think Elizabeth Taylor and Audrey Hepburn, with her dark hair twisted and smoothed into gorgeous waves and rolls. I love it. Wasn't so keen on the dress though...

Special mention to X Factor winners, Little Mix, I'm sure Jessy's hair is getting bigger! Love Perrie's headband and Jade's tumbling curls streaked with purple.

Surfing on Success or Sinking without Trace...

Wet-look hair has been hailed one of the hair trends of 2012. With catwalks awash with slicked-back locks, celebs have rushed to copy the look.
It can look quite androgynous and sophisticated and I think it's a great look for an evening out. Tying the hair into a slick bun ala Chanel would work, but if you don't fancy taking the plunge *groan* then leave the ends free for texture and movement. I love the pearls added on the Chanel catwalk, gives a pretty, mermaid look. What do you think?

Here are my top tips for recreating the look;

Rake fingers through the hair after applying product, it'll give volume and more of a dishevelled look.
If you fancy wearing the hair smooth on the head, use a comb and give yourself a deep-side parting to combine two great looks in one style.
Use a strong-holding gel. My favourites are L'Oreal Paris Studio Line Extreme, Clynol Fibreform Gum or Fudge Urban Gel Head

If you have an oval shaped face, or petite features this look will give your style an added edge. It works on girls that have curly or straight hair, and as it's minimum styling it means minimum damage to your hair. I love how Hayden has styled her short hair, it has a great rock feel about it. The added height mean it's not too severe a look on her.

And with a non-sulphate and gentle cleansing system it'll give your hair the care it needs after the daily abuse we put it through. With three ranges you can find one to tackle hair problems such as fragile & brittle hair (EverStrong), coloured hair (EverPure) or if you find you suffer with frizzy hair (EverSleek)

The lovely Chris Appleton (part of the L'Oreal team) recommended I try the EverStrong range. As I colour my hair, but find it struggles to grow and generally needs a little pick me up, this range is perfect for a in salon experience at home. I found the shampoo lathered well and left my hair feeling clean but moisturised. The treatment was amazing, as the EverStrong range contains rosemary and juniper it gave my hair a natural boost, and really refreshed my scalp and hair. I'm currently on the Aussie challenge, but this shampoo will definitely be next on my list, with a full review to follow.
One big and glam blow dry later and I was ready for my close up. Just a shame I only had strangers on the train home to impress...

Beautiful Braids

I gone a little braid crazy lately, from funky fishtails to intricate braided up do's they give a gorgeous look. It's the perfect style for a night out as it'll keep hair out of your face. And the best bit about a braided look? When you take it out you'll be left with lovely natural waves. That's a hair win right there!

Hair Envy: The Artist

I am certainly envious of a lot of hair lately!

I went to watch The Artist this evening, it's the silent film that has got critics talking and really caused a buzz amongst cinema goers (and unbelievably it's hard to find a cinema showing it!) It was absolutely amazing - life really does look better in black & white. If you haven't seen it, I really recommend you do, I could easily watch it again & again. The era of the silent movie is captured beautifully by Michel Hazanavicius.

Gazing at the hair worn by the leading lady Peppy Miller (played by the stunning Bérénice Bejo) & Doris (played by Penelope Ann Miller) filled my head with ideas of waves, gorgeous hair slides and drop waisted dresses. I really hope this influences trends towards some gorgeous styling of the 20's & 30's. I'm taking my hairspiration from it.

Sunday Snip #28

Good morning you lovely lot! Hope you've all had great weekends?
I'm currently back in the west country (which always makes me want to sing "west country la-la-la, west country la-la-laaaa") as this week I will be hanging around the YourHair magazine offices seeing what goes on at the No1 hair magazine. Hopefully it'll be an exciting week, and no doubt I'll report back to give you all the news! And if I'm lucky this could be another step in the right direction for my career.

Being back means I get to have a catch up with family & friends - lots planned in the evenings, can't wait but have a feeling I'm going to be knackered by the time I go home. It's started well with a catch up with friends and some stupid dancing at the local club.

Product of the Week
I was lucky enough to get a glimpse at a new L'Oreal Paris range. More on this to come lter in the week, but from what I've seen so far it's looking pretty good.

Celeb Hair of the Week
Lauren Goodger (one of the TOWIE girls) has gone to the dark side. Leaving behind the honey blonde locks for a gorgeous shiny deep brown. I think it looks lovely, and really suits her complexion and looks far healthier. A great new look for New Year. What do you think?

Handy Hint
An easy way to give yourself a more glamourous ponytail is by adding a headband. You can pick up so many different styles it's easy to find one to suit you. What do you think of these?

The People's Choice Awards celebrates the best in movies, television and music and with Vanessa Hudgens, Lea Michele & Ashley Greene in attendance you know you'll get some great red carpet hair (not literally hair made of red carpet, that'd be silly)
Celebs seemingly fell into three categories. Textured up do's, sideswept glamour and nice & natural seemed to be the order of the day.

Hair Envy: Kimberly Wyatt

Kimberly Wyatt. One part of the Pussycat Dolls, judge on Got to Dance and the owner of some very flexible limbs rocketed up my hair envy chart yesterday after I caught GTD: The Auditions.

From a retro roll, to a Bardotesque up do, her hair looked amazing audition after audition. I remember her going for a really short crop which set her apart from her other PCD members and really suited her, however the long locks are much more versatile. I can't wait to see what other styles are worn, haven't got this excited about judges hair since Dannii Minogue on the X Factor.

Good afternoon! I hope you've all had a lovely weekend? My sister, Crystal, and her boyfriend Paul have been to visit this weekend. We took a trip to St Albans yesterday and went for a lovely Italian meal on Friday night. It's great seeing them, but makes me realise I really miss my family not being close. How do you guys deal with long distance relations?

I managed to buy myself a few things on Saturday (they just fell in my shopping bag :) ....) and picked up Keith Richards book which I'm really looking forward to reading. The fox & deer print dress is from H&M, and the bag & rust coloured shirt are Tesco - so impressed with the selection in there at the moment.

Crystal also managed to fit in a quick cut & tidy of her hair. We are going to go shorter next time, her hair grows super quick so she can chop & change for a new style when she wants. I do her colour for her when I can - she loves a blonde look but I really think brown would suit her complexion. Maybe I can change her mind eh? :)

Enjoy your Sunday, I'm off to the pub for a cider and possibly a naughty takeaway on the way home...well, I did go to the gym today!

The long and short of men's hair...

In ancient Greece, long hair on men was a sign of power & wealth with gods and heroes leading the way. Warriors cut their hair short at the front and left the back long - wanting to avoid any 'hair pulling' in battle. And I remember learning in school about the Cavaliers and Roundheads - the latter preferring short hair, seeing the Cavaliers as 'lecherous' with their long flowing locks.

The 60's and 70's brought hippies and The Beatles, meaning bowl cuts and long hair were king. Didn't matter what camp you fell into, there was a style for all. And if you didn't know which to go for, the 80's brought the mullet. Short or long? Who knows.

Which looks better on these gentlemen?

Personally, I love a shorter, slightly scruffy look.

Happy New Year! I hope however you spent your New Year you enjoyed yourself. I've spent today eating a gorgeous roast dinner, writing in my new diary and watching Sherlock. How have you spent yours?
As we've seen the last of 2011, I thought I'd sum it with some of my favourite celebrity styles. 2011 saw a year of change for many, with some new looks and the emergence of some interesting trends.
Candyfloss hair - Seen on Katy Perry, Amelia Lily and Fearne Cotton to name but a few, pastel hues were a huge hit. What colour will appear next year I wonder?

Vintage Stylings - Adele has helped (along with some super strength hairspray!) to keep beehives popular. And along with some gorgeous red carpet styles it means we've all been looking to times gone by to style our hair. One 'trend' I really hope we continue to see.

Fake it - 2011 seemed to be the year of the extension or hairpiece. If you didn't have it, you could cheat it. With such a variety of realistic looking hair extensions appearing on the market (even one of the TOWIE girls has launched her own range!) at a more achievable price it meant we could all go from a bob to boob length locks in no time at all.
And finally, top knots, they have powered through the year, either being slick and controlled or left with texture for a more disheveled look, we love the humble bun. I must admit this is my favourite style, and classically timeless and adaptable for any occasion.

So old it seems I can't remember my blog birthday! Shame on me - I missed my blog birthday (8th December if you want to note it down) so thought I'd better celebrate albeit a bit late with a catch up of the year gone.
When I first started Hair Advice I wanted to make it a place where readers went to when they needed some hair advice, or just wanted to indulge in some hair happenings. I love writing and reading about hair, and hope you've enjoyed my posts.

I think I've definitely developed my little corner of the blog world, from Salon Surgery to Hair History with some great events thrown in I've had fun making Hair Advice (& All Things Nice) the blog it is today. I'm lucky enough to be invited to some great events and I'm trusted to give product reviews. It's also helped me gain more writing work, which is something I absolutely love.
I'm an Aussie Angel, and part of the Handpicked Media group, I've even managed to join More! as part of the Beauty Hot 100. I also LOVE the people who I've met through blogging and who I talk to on a daily basis - you amazing girls you!

Times gone by: Up do stunners...

As you all know I love hair up. I could gaze for hours at images of beautifully created curls and intricate up do's. With that in mind I thought I'd share some of my favourite hairstyles of times gone by. I think that whilst glamorous up do's are making a comeback it'll never match the shine and sophistication of some of the gorgeous styles I've seen. Some of the Hollywood starlets had some seriously lovely hair going on...

Elizabeth Taylor. A true Hollywood great, I am in equal amounts jealous of; her hair, eyebrows and jewellery collection. This style looks fantastic on brides, or for a high impact look that will definitely get you noticed. The jewelled headpiece can be changed to suit the occasion, or the hairstyle can be left to simply shine on it's own. What do you think?

Audrey. Simple, chic and elegant. Audrey has such a beautiful face shape and suits wearing her hair away from her face. This would be lovely for a glamorous night out.
And finally Vivien Leigh, the two styles below are just amazing, I love how structured they are yet hold a softness. I particularly love the style on the right, classic and wearing the hair up really shows off the detailing on the collar and shoulders.

If you are heading out for a Christmas party wearing your hair up can avoid that end of night slightly dishevelled look. Use a super strength hairspray (at the moment I'm using Tresemme Freeze Hold Hairspray) to help keep it in place, and always pop some emergency grips in your bag.

Good morning! Hope you are all getting in the festive mood and are all ready for Christmas? I have a really busy week of socialising, shopping (food - most important) and my works Christmas do, pictures of my hair will of course follow. What are your plans for the run up to Christmas?

Louise Redknapp & Schwarzkopf LIVE Salon Style...

When I read recently Louise Redknapp had become the face of Schwarzkopf I did wonder what would happen to her already gorgeous beach locks. I watch Something for the Weekend (mainly for the cooking - drool!) and love Louise's balayage golden lengths, usually worn with movement and texture for a relaxed look.

I have to say though, Schwarzkopf are going in the right direction as Louise looks gorgeous as a brunette. I think it brings out her eye colour and makes her hair look really healthy.

When I first saw this on the advert I'll admit I had my doubts....

Would it be easy to use?

Would I really get that volume?

Would I tangle my hair in a ball and have to have it cut?

I would recommend giving your hair a rough dry then finishing with the Big Styler, just makes things quicker and easier for you.

I love the way it makes my hair feel bouncy and gives it a great shine. And it is brilliant for my fringe, if I just want to style the front of my hair and give it a bit of body I'll run this through my hair for a quick fix boost. My hair is just below my shoulders and I have some layers in it, but I've used this on bob length hair and on long hair and it gives good volume that lasts. Firstly, winter can be a tough time for hair. With the change in temperature and central heating playing havoc on your tresses it's not hard for splits to appear.

Crisis at Christmas - You can help...

Christmas is about spending time with loved ones, enjoying the festivities and hopefully a few presents under the tree. But some do not have the gift of a home this Christmas. Crisis the national charity for single homeless people work endlessly to give people some sort of Christmas, whether it be from a hot meal, a relaxing massage or just a bit of companionship.

I'm volunteering for the first time this year. As I've got older, I've realised how lucky I am to have a home, and family. I will be working in the 'salon', cutting hair and whatever else I need to do. It's not much but I want to be able to make someone feel a bit better and by hairdressing I can do that.
Crisis don't only need service volunteers, if you have a passion for arts and crafts or just feel you could help by doing whatever Crisis throw at you please register. The minimum is two shifts (spaced 12 hours apart) and they have a few different centres that need your help.

I don't want anyone to think I'm pressuring people into registering, or that I'm 'holier than thou' by saying I'll be volunteering, I just wanted to bring awareness to something that is definitely worth giving a few hours up for.

My weekend has been fun-filled, chasing a small dog named Percie around. He's settling in well, and Holly loves him. It's great for her to have a young pup around the house to keep her on her toes.
I also managed to get my Christmas cards wrote, and my shopping done. I love making an effort with Christmas, it's such a lovely time of year and I can't wait for the break.

I'm a hairdresser...no, I'm a hairdresser

When I was little I remember a girl in my class snipping a friend's fringe. We were in primary school, it was done with a pair of craft scissors and it left my friend with a fringe missing a 2" chunk.

When asked what she was doing she replied "I was being a hairdresser"

Now, I'm sure as she is now grown up she wouldn't dream of getting scissor happy on someone's hair, but apparently some seem to think holding some scissors or a bowl of colour makes them a stylist.

Tory MP David Morris, who has in the past managed salons, proposed The Hairdressers Registration (Amendment) Bill, meaning that all hairdressers would need to be registered the same way as doctors and dentists are. I think this idea is fantastic, as a qualified stylist I would be more than happy to register on a database and receive accreditation from an official body that is recognised by clients. I do feel that whilst a charge would no doubt need to be applied, the fee should be kept as low as possible. For hairstylists starting out in the industry, a large licence fee along with liability insurance if they are freelance would definitely be a negative - and whilst many would ensure they were registered it criminalises hairstylists who may struggle financially if the fee was large.

If you went to salon or had a mobile hairdresser for your hair cut or colour you'd want to make sure they were sure on what they were doing. But do you ask? You may think it will sound silly or rude, but it's definitely something I'd recommend. Many won't mind if you ask if they are City & Guilds or NVQ Level 2 qualified, and if they do have a problem it may be worth asking if they are the right person for the job.

Unfortunately, Mr Morris was unsuccessful and the bill was defeated by 4 votes. Incredibly close, and it show's that in time something will need to be organised to ensure the safety of people who put their hair in a stylists hands. I find it incredibly scary that ANYONE can just say "I'm a hairdresser" and use some serious chemicals on hair. When you are training you feel proud receiving your qualification and even more so when you help give someone a great cut or colour - I don't want the industry tarnished by cowboy colourists or a foiling frauds.

I'm really interested in hearing your thoughts on this.

How do you shampoo?...

How you shampoo can be crucial to your hair, and using some simple massage techniques can make you feel you've just stepped out of a salon (without the price!)
Using massage techniques whilst shampooing and conditioning means a healthy scalp, good blood circulation and a relaxed you.

Effleurage...
This is the beginning of the shampoo, meaning you apply the product using the effleurage technique. You need to move your fingers in a slow manner, stroking the product on the scalp. Then move your hands down in a firm motion along the contours of your head, to the nape of your neck. This helps relieve tension and relax muscles.

Petrissage...
The next stage of the shampoo is petrissage which is a kneading motion. With your fingers well spread out on the scalp begin to knead slowly but firmly, move your right hand clockwise, and your left hand anticlockwise. Rather than sliding the fingers over the scalp, left your hand and move to a new area, you can leave one hand kneading whilst moving the other to a new area - this continues a relaxing massage. Start at the nape, work forward, then back to the nape. The petrissage technique helps stimulate the muscles and glands along with improving blood circulation.

Friction...
Probably the most commonly used, friction is the quick, vigorous movements over the scalp. Start at the front of the head and work back, then bring the movements back to the front of the scalp. I would avoid using this technique on longer hair, but it works well on short to mid-length hair.

If you are anything like me, you'll have a box full of gadgets. From curlers to straighteners and some weird contraption you aren't even sure is for your hair - you've tried the lot! So to help condense your hair gadgets into one the handy InStyler is here. It promises to curl, straighten and add volume to your hair.

I was impressed to find an interactive DVD included showing you EVERYTHING you can do with the InStyler, along with a detangling comb and drawstring bag to keep the InStyler in. A full instruction manual was also in the box.

It can be used on short or long hair, and with 3 different heat settings you can avoid damage to your hair by controlling the temperature. As it rotates it's guaranteed to catch all the hair, and along with the double bristles makes sure the hair is smoothly styled. It's best to use this on dry, or slightly damp hair and without product on the hair (although I would advise a heat protection spray) There is a also a heated plate in between the double bristles. They've thought of everything - even the auto switch off after 45 minutes. An essential element in my eyes.

I have been using this all week, trying out the different ways to use it, and I've been pleasantly surprised. I wasn't sure how the InStyler would be able to do everything promised but it delivers and is a handy tool to have. It costs £99.99, which you may think is quite expensive but if you think about it you are getting a curling tong, AND a straightening iron in one, so it's a pretty good deal.

Say Hello to My Little Friend!...

If you've been reading the blog for a while you will know I love dogs. Andy and I have a lovely Red Staffordshire Bull Terrier called Holly, who is 7, and we lost Dozer our Black staffy last year, which devastated us both. They aren't pets to me, they are members of the family. They become part of the 'pack' and their characters ensure your house is full of laughter and love. I understand not everyone loves staffies, and due to the negative press they receive some are afraid of them, however with a sensible owner and training, a staffy can be a loving, gentle and kind dog.

We hadn't been looking for another dog, but as fate would have it, Percie just needed a home. And who could say no to this little face...

And Holly is loving her new companion, another accomplice for when she purloins the bin contents after a Sunday dinner no doubt!

MerCurios - Taking me to the stars...

For my birthday I wanted a piece of jewellery that was personal to me, and different. I love wearing unusual, chunky jewellery. The bigger the better! MerCurios is Mary Jo, an extremely talented lady whose designs are bold, big and beautiful. I could have easily bought the whole shop - and definitely will be looking for another purchase in the future.
I chose the Silver Double Banner Ring and had it customised with 'Ad astra per aspera' along with a little star stamp. This phrase means a lot to me, and helps me realise that even though life and the challenges we face can be difficult at times, with hard work you can achieve your dreams. I also believe that people I loved and are sadly no longer with us are the stars that watch over me in the sky and keep an eye on the path I take, so this is a little nod to them.

After discussing what I wanted with Mary Jo, who is incredibly quick at getting back to queries and questions, I went ahead and ordered. As it's a custom order it took a bit longer to create but I'm so happy with the result. My favourite piece of jewellery hands down (apart my engagement ring) What do you think?

Hair Envy: The Great Gatsby

Set in the 1920's when bootleggers were Kings and the economy was booming, The Great Gatsby is a classic story and definitely a must read. I can't wait to see the remake of the film, Baz Luhrmann is one of my favourite directors, I think he's a genius - any film he creates is a feast for the eyes and The Great Gatsby promises all that and more.

When Shaun P presented the Tangle Teezer to the Dragon's they saw it as a 'hair brained' idea. Not being put off, and realising that your hair was in need of a helping hand when it came to detangling he launched the Tangle Teezer range and the rest is a knot free history.
I've been using the original styler for a few weeks now, and can honestly say I am amazed that my hair isn't shedding as much. After washing my hair, I religiously use a detangling comb from Boots, and whilst this reduced hair damage and breakage, the Tangle Teezer has all but eliminated that handful of hair I got when combing through. It is also great for brushing out up do's and when you've backcombed your hair.

My only improvement would be grip. As I use it to detangle my damp hair, some rubber grips on the side would work well to stop me launching it across the room (and almost into the mouth of a playful dog!) It would also be great if the Original Teezer came with a guard for storage, I've kept the box to avoid damaging bristles which would make it less effective.

I am total Tangle Teezer fan, and think they'd make a great Christmas gift (Yeh, I went there! Christmas talk!) There are a whole variety of colours too choose, and you can also get this brilliant Compact Styler. Which is a must in your handbag after getting blown sideways by the blustery Winter weather. You can also use it for giving your hair a day to night transformation by using it to gently backcomb hair.

The Original Teezer is £10.20, and the Compact Teezer is £12.24, which if you break it down by cost per use works out as a good deal. Look after your hair and it'll show, detangling using a Tangle Teezer gives the hair a good start.

A week of styles: My hair, your choice!

I generally wear my hair up during the week, for ease and to avoid over styling my hair. Whether it be a loose bun, or plaits I try and do something different everyday to stop myself getting stuck in a ponytail rut.
So next week I'm leaving it up to you, what do you want to see me doing to my hair? (please don't say shave it off!) From a Rihanna inspired Rude Boy style, to a pretty braided up do nothing is off limits.

Whatever styles you fancy me trying out I'll do tutorials on, so if you've seen something in a magazine or on a celeb let me know! I love a challenge so feel free to pick something that is a bit different, or maybe something you'd like for your Christmas do?

DIY: Natural Hair Mask Recipe

This mask is good enough to eat, contains natural ingredients, and is suitable for all hair types. So if you fancy giving your hair a treat then read on....

You'll need

1 ripe avocado

1 egg yolk

1 teaspoon of honey

Squeeze of lemon juice

Fork

Bowl

Cling film/shower cap

Hair in need of a treat

How to

Chop your avocado, place in a medium bowl, add the rest of the ingredients and work into a paste. Using a ripe avocado and fork helps avoid a chunky paste. Cover your hair and give yourself a good massage to help loosen your scalp and relax you.
Leave for 20-30 minutes, this makes sure all the goodness in the ingredients gets to work. I find popping a shower cap on helps avoid leaving the mask everywhere. As you've used egg, add a gentle shampoo to your hair first, working into a lather, then wash with luke warm water to ensure you don't end up with scrambled egg on your head (not a good look!)

Benefits

Avocado is great at helping to hydrate the hair, and it contains vitamins C & E which improve circulation & act as an antioxidant for hair follicles. Copper is also in this little green bad boy, which is known to promote hair growth. Egg contains protein which is great for strengthening your hair, it also helps give great shine. Three cheers for eggs!

Rainbow Brite for the night...

Bit of a reoccuring theme lately, me and dressing up. The latest was to celebrate Kristie's 30th, the theme 'When I Grow Up' Which I thought was great as it was broad and could be adapted to anything. I had a children hero was I younger. Rainbow Brite. That girl was everything I wanted to be, she had a horse, sparkles and a star on her cheek...and got to dress in rainbows daily, pretty special in my eyes!
All the outfits I searched for online seemed, well, for want of a better word, slutty. So I made my own, sourcing the dress from Tesco (with some added cotton wool!) and socks from a local fancy dress shop (who didn't have a clue who Miss. Brite was!) The belt was created by me also, along with the hair clip. This was the result, rainbow-tastic!

The party was great, everyone made a real effort. From lollipop ladies to bananaman, with a ghostbuster and a rock star thrown in for good measure! The picture above is the birthday girl, and my gorgeous friend Annie - along with me!

Why is there one style fits all?

Being the nosey person I am, I couldn't help but overhear some ladies chatting on the train recently, one was discussing getting her hair cut short. This ladies hair was well below shoulder and a gorgeous Auburn colour, when asked why she was getting it cut she said "I think I'm just getting too old for it"

When did there become age limits for cuts?

"Want a bob?...oh you're 40, I'm afraid you can't"

"Can I see some ID please, otherwise no layers for you!"

A good cut can be flattering at any age, depending on face shape and hair texture. There are some styles that are classed as 'old' or 'too young', now don't me wrong I don't particularly want to see my nan with a mohawk dyed Pink (although she would totally rock it - she's amazing!) but we can break the rules right?

And it's not just cuts, colours needn't have age restrictions, Lady GaGa, Kelly Osbourne, and Pixie Geldof are just some young celebs who have decided that Grey hair can work for them.

Why get stuck in an age rut thinking you are too old for a short Red crop or too over the hill for long beachy waves. Style your hair to suit you, your lifestyle and how you want to look - life's too short to worry about fitting into your age group, although can I please request anyone over 10 avoids pigtails, especially high ones with ribbon. :)

Hair Hero: Patrick Cameron

Patrick Cameron is well known in hair world as the King of the up do. He can transform a long mane into a work of art with a brush and some pins. Most hairdressers you speak to will have bought a DVD, or book with Patrick taking them through the styles he creates. The man's a brand, you can buy hair pads, brushes, and even train at the Patrick Cameron school.
Arriving in England from New Zealand in 1987, he has worked closely with Wella, becoming the best in up do's and creating stunning styles many stylists take inspiration from. I love the high octane glamour and sophistication Cameron creates with his styles, they look so intricate and polished - very Hollywood old school glamour.

Salon Secrets...

I had my hair cut and coloured on Saturday, as an early birthday treat and went to a local salon to try out their services.
Firstly I'll admit, I was a little sneaky and didn't tell them I was a qualified stylist, and self confessed hair geek. I generally don't when I'm in a salon as I like them to treat me like any other client. And it's interesting to see what 'advice' they give to a 'normal' client.

To start with we discussed the colour I wanted, I asked for two colours in a T section through the top to freshen my existing colour. And was helped to choose the two most suited for a natural looking, easy maintenance colour. Now onto the cut! I explained what I wanted, and was advised layers would be great for some shape, so making sure I let the stylist know (by showing him exactly where I wanted the layers to sit) we went ahead. I kept my side fringe and made sure the length whilst given a healthy trim wasn't too much. Showing them what you think an inch is, is important, and makes sure you are on the same page.
I'll admit I was given some good advice with regards to conditioning and looking after my hair, however the sell, sell, sell mantra was definitely in place. I was told I needed a certain type of shampoo and conditioner, a Brazilian blow dry and some TIGI products (one of which was for brunette hair which is strange as I'm blonde!)
So what advice can I give if the salon scares you?

Don't be bullied into having a style or colour you aren't 100% on. If they think a fringe would look amazing on you, but you really don't want one. Don't do it.
They will try and offer products used, or recommended. It isn't compulsory to buy these, and you can often get the products online for a cheaper price.
If you aren't happy with the end result, speak up! Salons don't want you going away with a negative feeling, and would rather you mentioned if something is wrong.

I was really happy with my final style, and got a big bouncy blow dry which accentuated my natural wave. Unfortunately, the salon fell at the last hurdle, they bad mouthed my previous cut & colour with another stylist/salon. That is such a massive no no in my eyes, I don't want people in the same industry to feel the need to critique others work in front of me, it makes me feel uncomfortable and I find it unnecessary. Have you ever experienced this?
I'm not going to name and shame the salon, as I don't feel that's my place to do so, however it gave me an idea of how some of you can feel when going to the hairdressers. Stay strong and stand your ground! And share your thoughts about salons below...

Sunday Snip #26

Last night was my birthday night out with the girls, so this Sunday Snip comes to you slightly bleary eyed. It's not my birthday till Tuesday, but I tend to make it a week long celebration. Worse than the Queen! Don't think she's got moves like this though...

Product of the Week
I know it's not a hair product, but I really have to mention something that has helped change my skin for the better lately. I've been suffering from hormonal break outs, and some nasty spots. My skin just wasn't itself. I picked up this Tesco Cucumber Facial Scrub and what a difference it's made! And the best bit, it's only 80p! Not even a £1!! Bargain. Have any of you tried supermarket brands for your beauty regime?

Kelly Rowland has definitely "put it down" lately when it comes to hair. It just goes to show, if you haven't got it naturally, wearing wigs, weaves and extensions can boost your look. Do you boost your natural hair by using hairpieces?

Hair Envy: Emma Stone

This lady has been on my hair radar for a while now. And it's not just her hair I'm jealous of, she's got to play the love interest of Ryan Gosling which is enough to make most of us green with envy.

The shades have varied but the colouring really suits her complexion, and I think the style is very versatile. She can change her fringe from sweeping to a parted look. And the up do's I've seen are glamorous yet have a hint of a relaxed feel about them. I also have lip envy going on, she knows how to pick a lip-shade to suit. Gorgeous!

I can't believe she was blonde. I definitely prefer her with gorgeous Auburn tones.

An evening of murder, mystery, and the 1920's...

Murder mystery + 1920's theme = a very happy Kelly!

For a friend's 30th birthday this October we were treated to a night of mystery, and some fabulously dressed times!

I channeled Louise Brooks and wearing a dark bobbed wig, styled in fingerwaves. I love wearing wigs to parties when dressing up, think it really helps the overall look and you end up looking completely different for the night. I also curled Kristie's hair for the night and pinned to the side with some pretty clips. My outfit was from ebay, with a slip underneath, I loved it and wish I could dress like that everyday! :) Here's a few snaps from the night...

It was a fantastic night, the actors were brilliant and everything about the evening was just such fun! Have you ever been to a murder mystery evening? Do you think it looks like fun?

I am still in love with fishtail plaits. I think they look great for Autumn/Winter and can be worn for a casual daytime look, or even for an evening out. If you don't have long lengths, go for a cute fishtail plait worn pinned back in the hair, and if you have mermaid tresses - get plaiting!! How will you wear yours?

Liv is a natural beauty, graced with all her dad's best bits (lips) and she has a ethereal like beauty about her. And her hair is lets face it, pretty amazing to. Gorgeous brunette with great shine she's the perfect example of healthy looking hair.

Liv is no stranger to the Pantene brand, having first appeared in a Pantene advert back in 1996! She may look a little older now but the hair is still lovely!

Home Dye-saster!

We are always on the lookout for ways to save some of our hard earned cash, and home dye kits have been around for ages. I remember my nan using a ash tint on hers and wondering about in a cap whilst it developed.
But there have been some scary stories in the press recently that have no doubt put the fear into home dye fans. The stories and pictures of women suffering horrific reactions to dyes has shown that this popular way of colouring needs stronger regulations and monitoring to ensure we aren't harmed by what had seemed a safe way to colour our hair.

The majority of stories have concerns over a certain chemical appearing in dye kits, PPD or p-Phenylendiamine helps fix the dye into hair permanently but is being blamed for 80% of allergic reactions. PPD appears in a number of items, from printing ink to even some dark cosmetics. It's definitely worth reading your manufacturers instructions to see if it contains PPD, and if it does, it may be worth swapping to a semi permanent.

The main thing to remember is no matter how many times you have used a dye before, always skin/patch test, you can become allergic at any time, so better to be safe than sorry. Although these tests aren't fail-safe they can avoid a nasty reaction that may need medical treatment. And if you are concerned about a hair colourant, don't use it, there are natural brands on the market that avoid chemicals that can cause reactions.

Remember watching Frenchie in Grease? The bubblegum popping and Pink lady jacket wearing beauty school dropout had the most amazing Pink hair. Although the result was due to a mistake in tinting class I think it suited her Pink lady status down to a T (-Bird, hehe)

Recently we've seen a whole host of celebs jump on the candyfloss colouring train, from Katy Perry to Fearne Cotton. Lily Allen was well ahead of the pack, sporting an amazing shade of Pink way back in 2008! The shades may be varied but the colour is umistakeable, does Pink make the boys wink though?

I'm not a massive fan I have to admit, and it's not something I'd do to my hair. But for those wanting a change, I recommend a semi permanent colour such as Fudge Paintbox if you are a blonde. And for brunettes fancying a bit of Pink in their hair? Go for clip in extensions for an instant flash of colour with no commitment.

This morning Andy, Holly (our Red staffy) and myself took to the hills. The weather was far too gorgeous to sit inside, so we decided to go to Barton Hills, not too far from us, and a gorgeous walk I'm sure you'll agree...

It was such a lovely morning, the sun was shining and there was a great Autumn feel, crispy leaves, trickling streams and bright berries on the trees.

So I've now got a very sleepy dog who's knackered after chasing squirrels and birds over & under trees and through streams. She's going to have some fun dreams tonight...

The roast is prepped so it's time for a few ciders to finish the weekend nicely.

GHD couldn't have chosen a better ambassador for their brand. Katy Perry looks amazing in the latest campaign to advertise the new Scarlet styler.
Inspired by the art deco & 1920's influences that were all over the A/W11 catwalks GHD have given us some beautifully shot images (thanks to David La Chapelle) of Katy looking like a screen siren of times gone by. The styling is gorgeous, from the fun flapper dress, to the decadent evening gown - I think she looks like an evil disney character!

I think this totally surpasses the last campaign and I can't wait to see what they come up with next. I love how the shots aren't totally focused on the product, the Red clutch you can see in the background in the flapper shot, and on the table in the bedroom shot is the actual GHD Scarlet Deluxe edition set. Straighteners have never been so stylish! And I love the tagline for the Scarlet...

Autumn shades for your hair...

Gorgeous burnt copper colours, honey hues, the Autumn landscapes give us inspiration for our hair colouring on a daily basis, and with the last burst of sunshine highlighting the kaleidoscope of colours I'm reminded of some stunning shades I've spotted lately.

Florence Welch has left behind the fiery shades of Red for a more subtle copper tone. I think this colour looks great on her skin tone and is much easier to maintain than the more commonly seen cherry Red. Also think the styling is fantastic, fit for a Chanel mermaid-esque appearance don't you think?

Emma Stone looks great with a gorgeous Auburn colour. I can't believe she used to be blonde! She definitely suits the warmer tones of colouring. She's avoided a flat looking colour by making sure there are different tones through her hair. I love it, what do you think?

Scissors, Studs and a little time...

I love changing clothes and accessories to look a little different from the rest, after all who wants to turn up wearing the same top, or shoes as someone else. I've shown you these shoes before, but my DIYing didn't stop there.
I bought these studs from Ebay and got to work on giving my already changed shoes more of a fierce look. I punched a hole in the fabric, then screwed the stud on. Simple, yet I love the result, although my fingers took a battering from pushing the studs in. You definitely wouldn't want to be crossing feet with me wearing these...

Also, I got scissor happy on a t-shirt I bought in the Jukupop sale. It's a mens t-shirt but for £4.00 (P&P is free) you can't go wrong. I took the collar off, and also the sleeves. I can't wait to layer this up in Winter with a chunky cardi, black skirt and heavy boots. I also think it'd look great tucked into a spotted pencil skirt with heels. What do you think?

The Celeb Colour Chameleons...

Celebs love to chop and change their colour, going from Blonde to Brown in an instant - and more often than not back again. Kylie Minogue is the latest to change her look, but are they lucky enough to suit the change in shade? Or should they stick to darker hues?
Lets take a look...
Kylie has stuck to the same shades for a fair few years now, but taking a leaf from Dannii's dark look she's gone for a dark Brown. I'm not taken with the colour, and think it's a bit severe for her. What do you think?

Cheryl Cole, she's dabbled with rich brunette tones, honey highlights, and caramel colour, but which do you prefer? Or do you think she's lucky enough to suit both?

Next up, Scarlett Johanson, I think Scarlett is incredibly beautiful, but prefer her with darker hair. It just seems to vamp her up a bit, and I love the styling, winged eyeliner and Red lips. I think darker colours work well with her complexion.

Katy Perry is next for debate, she's always been a raven haired beauty since she's been in the spotlight, but recently the bleach has battled and given Katy a lighter look. She's now sporting candyfloss locks as part of her fun image, but I think I prefer the dark side. Wonder what Russell thinks?

Good afternoon! I hope you are all making the most of the sunshine? What gorgeous and unexpected weather for October.
Friday brought sunshine, and styling, with a wedding to do. Toni, the gorgeous bride has jaw length hair, so I created a gorgeous up do to compliment her tiara. Mother of the bride and bridesmaid also got some attention, and all looked great.

I had some great news, I've been granted a wish! The Fairy Hobmother waved his wand on Tuesday, and very kindly gave me a £50 Amazon voucher.
Those who haven't heard of the The Fairy Hobmother, it's a lovely chap called David from Appliances Online who loves to spread joy and gifts to us bloggers. It really does make your day getting a little surprise to treat yourself. I've been needing some new trainers for the gym (fitness bug has hit me hard guys! I'm a gym bunny!) and also been dying to try out the Babyliss Big Hair styler, so as it was a lot cheaper than other websites I added some of my hard earned pennies to the pot and got both. So from head to toe I'll be happy! I want to say a massive thank you to the Fairy Hobmother, this was a lovely surprise and really made my day.

Vintage hair styling seems to be catching in celeb land, Sarah Harding got her fingerwave on at the Look Show, Tulisa gave us great era hair for the X Factor auditions and Dannii Minogue has been making the most of her cute crop.

I love it, and you may have noticed I quite like Dannii Minogue! In fact she is a massive hair crush of mine. This feathered hairband she wore during London Fashion Week is really beautiful and dresses the hair perfectly. Tulisa's up do is stunning - so intricate and I think would look amazing for a night out or big party. I feel this Winter hair up is going to be very popular. From show stopping curls to slick sophisticated stylings, it's a great opportunity to try something different. I've recently picked up this book for some research.

So vintage styling looks like it's going to be a massive trend for hair this Winter. Glamorous and stylish, and really makes hair a talking point. I'm hoping to show you how to create some easy looks to get the 'vintage' look, so keep reading! And if you see a celeb style you want to try out, let me know.

New Stylist with the X Factor...

Last year we had Adam Reed creating 'that' Katie crop, and Rebecca Ferguson's beautiful hairdo's and a fine job he did! I love checking out the contestants and how their image changes.

So who's picking up the backcombing brush this year?

Jamie Stevens, Somerset super stylist, and nominee in four categories for the British Hairdressing Awards this year. It's definitely safe to say the hair is in good hands!

You may recognise Jamie, he's the resident hairdresser on This Morning, and also helped Gok Wan with the ladies on How to Look Good Naked. The contestants are going to be in top commpany, Jamie is no stranger to styling celebs, being handed the title of Celebrity Hairdresser of the Year 2010. Good afternoon gorgeous readers! I hope you've had a relaxing weekend? One of my oldest friends came to stay Friday evening, we headed out for drinks & a massive catch up. Saturday & Sunday were quiet, I've been really busy during the last few weeks, so it was nice to just relax (albeit after organising all of next weeks hairdressing/writing/social events - I want to hibernate!!) Got a few busy weeks ahead so it's no rest for me! Andy is fishing for the week so it'll give me a chance to sort lots out and whilst I'll miss him lots, I do enjoy starfishing in the bed. :)

Celeb Hair of the Week
Oh Cheryl. I know you like a bit of volume but is there really any need to backcomb the bejesus out of your hair? Saving grace though, I loved the back. Gorgeous! What do you think?

Handy Hint
When styling your hair, whether it be a blow dry or using straighteners start at the back of your head. By the time you get to the front your arms will more than likely be aching. Avoid that by styling back to front.

Firstly, sorry for the woeful title, I thought I'd attempt clever (I'm not really sorry, I laughed at my play on words...) Secondly, Dove's new nourishing oil care range really is heavenly.

Does it do what it promises?

'Dove's unique nourishing care system containing weightless nautral almond and coconut oils, made of molecules so fine they are rapidly absorbed to deeply nourish and replenish essential nutrients'

I have to say, Dove have got the formulation right, it doesn't weigh your hair down. I have been using the shampoo & conditioner and have found my hair a lot smoother and easier to roughly blow dry without needing a lot of styling the next day (being a lazy girl after the gym! - my arms hurt, I can't do a proper blow dry)

It also promises that it smoothes up to 100% roughness & controls frizz. My hair is just below shoulder, and medium/thick with a natural wave, I haven't got the worst case of frizzy hair but I have definitely noticed a difference with overall styling. With the winter weather arriving I think this would be a great addition to your haircare routine.

Would I get it again?

Yes. For around £5.88 for the shampoo (250ml) & conditioner (200ml) it's good value for the result. You don't need to use a lot to build a good lather, and the conditioner is thick and leaves hair feeling soft and manageable. I'm still using mine and that's after a week and washing 3/4 times a week.

Anything else to say?

The packaging is sleek and I like the colouring. There is also a nourishing intensive treatment if your hair really needs a treat. I'm planning a bit of a change for my hair soon so will be using this to give my hair a treat.
A few people have commented on the condition of my hair - saying my locks look shiny and asking if I've coloured my hair. So it goes to show Dove is onto a winner! I'm more than happy.

The Coterie & Blow Presents...

London Fashion Week is a great chance to see not only the latest in clothing, but the trends being strutted down the catwalk for your hair. A (slightly) blurry eyed me, headed to LSO St Lukes on Sunday to see some amazing collections head down the catwalk and also got a chance to see some of the key trends and how to recreate them. First up the fashion, I thought the 'goth' styling of Liberum Arbitrium, the zips, hoods and grungy layering looked fantastic. I also thought Jane Bowler's collection was beautiful, from the gorgeous tassle detail to the shimmering scale like jackets. Wet look hair was featured majorly, from slicked back hair worn straight down the back to wet look knots, pulled tight at the back. Braids were keep to the front of the hair, and looped create a cornrow effect.

Adam Reed, creative genius of the House of Holland catwalk hair, and all round super session stylist recreated four key looks seen on the catwalk. I loved being close up so I could see all the hair workings, and Adam seems a lovely guy. He was using Sebastian products on the day, and the Shaper Fierce looks great, definitely a range to find out more about I think! It's great the little bits of advice you pick up, for example, hair combs and rubber bungees from Morrisons are just as good for the catwalk as for your hair. Who knew!?

I got some great ideas, and the thoughts are bouncing around my head for recreating these looks with my own twist. I love that all are wearable (well maybe not pompom's in your local supermarket!) and quite simple to do. Which will you be trying? Fake a fringe? Or Adam's take on the 40's?

Cocktails & Catwalks, The Look Show 2011

Event: The Look Show
Place: Westfield Centre, Stratford
Purpose: To see some gorgeous clothes from top high street brands and check out the hair.

I managed to get some tickets ~~to the gun show~~ for the Look Show, and myself & Kristie (my lovely plus one, who is the lender of hair!) headed down on the train for a day of clothes, champers and chatter!
The Westfield Centre is huge, and was amazingly busy. So we stopped for cocktails on the way...

How did I wear my hair, I decided to go for my simple big braided updo. Easy, and it stayed put, photos are from the end of the day! What do you think?

The show was great, Sarah Harding strutted her stuff down the Look catwalk, with some amazing Copper finger waves. I didn't even recognise her! Kelis & Alesha Dixon (ENTAAARRRR) were front row to check out how the big high street brands will be kitting us out this Autumn & Winter. I was really impressed with Dionne Bromfield, she's tiny, but has such a great voice live.

Hair wise I saw influences from the 20's/30's with slick styles on short crops that looked fantastic against tailored trousers and shift dresses. Textured hair looked fabulous in a half up style. It was twisted into a vertical roll, then left loose. A simple style that will look great and the disheveled look works so well during this season and it's weather. Do you like the textured look?

I had a great time, and briefly bumped into Lily, and saw Jen (so near yet so bloody far!!) from a distance, such a shame I didn't get to see more of some lovely bloggers but it was manic! The caramel nibbles and water in the goody bag definitely helped the train journey home. And I was more than happy on swiping my gift card in Miss Selfridge to find I'd won £20! So I bought a very pretty blouse.
I'm exhausted, but battling on tomorrow as I'm attending a Coterie event to see more fashion fabulous hair! Massive thanks to Look, and I'm looking forward to the next show already!

Budget Item: Girlz Only Dry Shampoo

Having a wonder round the beauty aisles at Tesco the other night, I found this tin of dry shampoo tucked alongside Batiste. Not one to be a label snob I popped it in my basket and duly paid my £1. Yes really, a whole pound. This was on offer, full price is normally £1.50, still not too damaging to your bank balance! Girlz Only is a pretty unknown brand to me, and I can't seem to find an official website, only the link to their PR company.
Dry shampoo features quite a lot in my weekly hair routine. I use it not only to cover any grease or bad hair days, but it is also great for helping create great texture and volume for up do's. I've introduced dry shampoo (varied brands) to clients young and old, and it's very much a staple product.

So can this product pack a powdery punch against the biggies?

The answer is yes! I'll admit I wasn't expecting big things from this dry shampoo but it's impressed me. It does just what it should, stops grease over taking your hair and gives you another day. And it's great at giving you a bit of volume. It doesn't leave white marks in your hair, and isn't too dusty that you struggle blending it in. It also brushes out well leaving no residue or your hair feeling dried out and dull.

For price and value for money you really can't beat it, £1.50 for 150ml is a bargain. The only negative I have is the name, Girlz Only, and packaging as I feel they really 'cheapen' the product. A simple, clean design I feel would benefit the product.

That's Winter tied up...

The bun, more recently called 'the knot' shows no signs of being out of favour with the fashionistas. Catwalks have been awash with knots, from relaxed to tight, there is a knot for everyone. Which knot will you choose?

Chanel showcased some gorgeous, relaxed style. Doesn't matter if layers fell loose, slightly swept to the side and carefree this is my favourite way to wear a bun this year.
Dolce & Gabbana kept it soft and very feminine, a soft chignon ballet bun hybrid perfect for day or night. Again as with the Chanel look, it's about getting that balance between casual and styled.
And now for something completely different! Marios Schwab showcased a very slick style. Pulling the hair to the top of the head and using gel to get rid of flyaways this look is for the brave. Not one I'd try myself, but for girls with sharp features and long necks, it's a great high impact look.

Head & Shoulders hit the big 5-0!

It's been a staple product of many a bathroom for years, and when you think dandruff fighting you think Head & Shoulders. Amazingly, Head & Shoulders is 50 this year! And whilst the packaging has changed, the ideal is the same, great hair with no dandruff.

I helped Head & Shoulders celebrate in style by watching (and trying out myself!) creative director Peter Lux recreate some classic styles that are iconic when you think of past hair. Think Audrey Hepburn, Farrah Fawcett & more recently 'the Rachel'. Would you like to recreate the beautiful updo that Audrey wore in Breakfast at Tiffany's? How about a really easy blow dry? Or maybe a take on an 80's look? I've been lucky enough to get my hands on a vodcast from Peter Lux, and you can watch below.

I LOVE the Audrey, honestly love it, looks so glam and is pretty simple to do, and I'm giving the blow dry a go the next time my hair needs a pick me up mid afternoon.Would you give any of the styles a go?

New Hair: Dannii Minogue

Dannii Minogue stepped out recently with a very sharp crop. Making the most of her features and keeping it dark to suit her skintone she looked great. It really has that 1920's look about it, and I love the slicked front. What do you think?

Wearing the fringe full for Melbourne Spring Fashion Week gives a very different look, I think the fringe hides her face, and whilst it looks on trend, I'm not sure if I like it as much as the earlier flicked pixie cut. It also kind of reminds me of Monica's hair in Friends when Phoebe cuts it - sorry Dannii!! She did however have the most gorgeous dress on, beautiful beading and a pretty back detailing - so in love with this dress!

But one thing is that it goes to show how versatile her new hair is - which is something I love, can't wait to see how she styles it up for future events, just wish she was still on the X Factor!

Gentleman prefer...Brunettes?!

Recent research by social network site Badoo, polled 2,000 men and the results showed that 60% preferred Brunettes. Blonde bombshells such as Pamela Anderson just don't cut it apparently! Does this surprise you?
I must admit, Raven haired beauties such as Megan Fox & Angelina Jolie have shown that staying away from the bleach can be just as attractive. As I discussed in a previous post, when thinking of Brunettes, most think of healthy, glossy hair. Maybe this sways the male vote? After all research has shown that whilst women look for an older man for stability, men look for a younger mate as means fertility and health.

I think the most iconic Blonde, Marilyn Monroe, who men undoubtedly found sexy gave us women the idea that Blonde meant attractive and has paved the way for our love affair with Blonde.

Pixie Lott, Britney Spears and a whole gaggle of celebs go mad for Blonde, even Cheryl Cole lightened up a few shades recently - though I don't think Ashley is picky!

Other research has shown that whilst men do find Blonde women attractive, they'd rather marry a Brunette. So is a Brunette seen as more sensible, settling down material?

Autumn with Boots & Mark Hill...

I was recently invited to have a peek at what to expect from Boots this Autumn. Mark Hill, a celebrity haircare brand exclusive to Boots have gone wild, using leopard print on hairdryers and tongs. Now for me this is amazing, as you all know I'm obsessed with that spotty print. They've even got mini travel dryers - which are so cute! Creative director, Jules Holland was on hand to talk us through the new products giving really helpful advice and info.

The jumbo rollers also caught my eye, we all love huge curls & waves and these would be great to pop in. The rollers are concentrated on giving big waves and curls, so if you want a tighter curl I wouldn't recommend these. But for glam luxe hair, definitely check them out.

I loved the "look" wall, with products from Boots on show to make sure you knew what you needed to recreate the look. The low pony is fantastic, disheveled and casual it would look great for an evening out.

Braids & Boots

Lately I've been wearing my hair in two jumbo plaits into a pinned messy up do. It's easy and keeps your hair off your face in a more interesting way than just pulled back into a ponytail. The bigger the plait the better, and this would work with any length of hair, so you shorties can have a go! Purchased with a gift card I won for telling Bertie a festival tale of lost tents, stolen clothes and general Glasto goings on. Perfect for Winter (come on we are all thinking about it-current outlook from my window RAIN!) and they go with anything, dresses, shorts, jeans. It's also great they are incredibly comfy - the wedge heel is just the right height. So bring it on winter weather! (For those worrying about the boots they have been sprayed and protected already) I'm in love with them, it's driving Andy mad! :)

Short, Medium or Long? What's your cut?

Ever flipped through a magazine and thought "I love that style but it just wouldn't suit me"
Most of the time because we are stuck in a style rut we find it hard to imagine ourselves with a radical new style.
So what cut can you pull off? Need layers round your face? Or a blunt fringe? Short or long chances are at some point we've had a few different styles. So what suits who? Read on for some shape and style tips.
I wrote about finding your face shape, it's a simple easy trick that anyone can do. And it works.

Oval

The luckiest of all the face shapes so they say. Oval's can pull off a variety of lengths, short, medium or long. The "perfect" features mean it doesn't matter if you go for a crop, or wear it long you'll look great. However, they are advised to wear away from the face, and avoid heavy fringes that can hide your face shape.

Square

If you are a square (in face shape only of course!) then look at medium hairstyles with lots of movement & texture. Avoid straight styles that hang down, this will only accentuate your jawline. Bob styles suit square face shapes, however you'll need layers to avoid a blunt look. Square face shapes suit a light fringe, full or sweeping and adding height at the crown is perfect to balance your features.

Round

With a round face shape, the only key bit of advice is to avoid a style that mirrors the face shape. i.e. a rounded bob cut ending at your chin. Work with layers at the top and the rest of the hair lying close to your face shape to help narrow and elongate. Go for a side parting rather than centre and add height at the crown to balance.

Rectangular

Long & slender, rectangular face shapes often have a narrow chin or high forehead. The danger with having a rectangular face shape is wearing your hair too long, which gives the illusion of the face being longer than it is, be careful of adding too much height which can also lengthen. Styles above the shoulders suit this face shape, and you are one of the lucky face shapes that suit a centre parting. Layers can help to add softness to your face shape.

Not as catchy, but you can understand my reasoning. Monday has reached me, slightly jaded and more than happy with the weekend of reggae, cider and some gorgeous food. Every weekend should be a bank holiday shouldn't it?!

Celeb Hair of the Week
This week I need you lot to help me out. Pixie Lott's new hair, is it a do or a don't? I can't help but look at it and see a hint of Sue Barker, no offense to Pixie, she's a gorgeous girl but I don't think this style suits her.

Handy Hint
Suffering from split ends? Have a rummage in the kitchen cupboard and pop some olive oil on the ends for a treat your hair will love. It won't cure the split ends but it will help fight the battle. Remember when removing the oil to use shampoo on dry hair first then add water. Adding water first will create a barrier meaning the oil won't be removed, and no one wants a chip pan on their head do they.

Product of the Week
I recently popped this pink tinned Vo5 hairspray into my shopping basket and will be sharing my thoughts once I've well and truly road tested it. With a promise of being "weather resistant" I have high hopes for it coping with the unpredictable weather we are having at the moment.
(am I being ungirly by thinking the hair world has gone Pink mad lately? Nothing seems safe, from hot rollers to shampoo bottles!)

Us hairdressers use something called the ICC (International Colour Chart) Generally all manufacturers follow this and the colour codes that appear on the boxes can be followed by the chart. The numbers represent how light or dark the colour is, this is known as the depth. The overall colour that is seen, is known as the tone. If you want to know more about the ICC and the colours you choose, make sure you keep reading as I'm working on a post for all your "artificial beauties" :)

Can a temp colour be Xtreme?

Temp colours are a fantastic way to try out a fun, new look without a. the commitment, b. the risk of causing major damage to your hair, and c. spending a fortune! But are they any good?
Colour Xtreme (part of the Lee Stafford hair brand) is a range of spray on colour, in a variety of shades. All amazingly bright and wash in, wash out, they are an easy way to alter your hair in an instant. Rainbow hair has become something of a trend lately, with even Lauren Conrad tipping her ends for a grungy, colourful look.
As you all know I have Blonde hair, highlighted earlier this year. I took inspiration from Jessie J's recent colour flash at the front of her hair and got spraying, firstly plaiting the front, then twisting, and finally brushing through for a softer look. What do you think? Which one is your favourite?

I got the giggles in the twist picture - no idea why!

I love these sprays, they are so easy to use, and whilst they do dry the hair, adding some shine spray once finished spraying would give you the gloss back. After you wash the colour out there is no sign of damage, or residue left behind, I would however recommend using an intensive conditioner to combat the drying element of the sprays. Also, they are very messy, use a towel and get spraying in your bathroom. The Silver spray is more of a glitter than colour, and I must admit this gave quite a bit of sparkle when I sprayed my plaits. I wouldn't recommend using these long term if you wanted a brighter colour on your hair, but they are great for using as a one off, for parties, or just a bit of a change.

They even work on dark hair, so it's not just blondes who'll have more fun with these. I tried the sprays on a dark wig and the colours whilst not so bright, definitely stood out. I sprayed my Halo Hair extensions (which unfortunately don't match my hair anymore - they are dark Brown & Blonde) and even managed a rainbow fishtail plait, which I think looks really pretty.

Salon Surgery: Healthy Hair

I recently got an email from a reader asking if I could give some advice about thinning hair. As you've probably noticed from reading the blog, I am a huge believer in making sure hair is healthy. After having a bit of a nightmare with mine a few years back, I realised you do have to work to keep it looking & feeling great.

"I was quite poorly a couple of months ago...luckily I'm well on the way to a better health and things are looking a lot better! Sadly though, in the last month or so, I noticed changes in my hair...a LOT falling out in the shower (literally loads!!) and it just generally being in quite a bad condition, eg. dry and easily splitting ends and thinning really badly!
I know that this is almost definitely a repercussion of me being ill and that it will take some time, but in the mean time, is there anything you could suggest to make me feel a little more confident as it's really knocked me!"

When we get ill, are hair & nails usually show the effects. It can take a while to help your hair get fighting fit, but through diet and some treats hopefully you'll start to see improvements. Using deep conditioning treatments, eating a varied diet and cutting out using heated tools will give you better hair guaranteed. I've often wrote about how important certain foods are, and how other essential ingredients can play a part in helping hair stay strong.

If you do have to bite the bullet and go shorter then don't worry. Healthy hair will grow, and you aren't helping it by holding on to length that is essentially bringing the healthy part of the existing hair down. Majority of time hair will look much healthier and bounce back to life when cut shorter. Keep up with regular trims and ensure you treat it kindly to avoid any damage.If you colour your hair, stick to a semi permanent colour to add shine and give hair a boost.

The Tangle Teezer is brilliant at gently removing and dealing with knots and tangles - it's really important not to stress the hair by combing when wet, leave it to dry slightly before tackling it. Boots have got Lee Stafford products on 3 for £12 at the moment so if you want to help hair along the Hair Growth range can play a part in getting those long locks back. It's also great at helping with hair shedding, one thing I will say is that using too hot water when washing hair, and massaging a little too much will shed more hair, so turn down the temp and avoid giving your hair a good scrub.

V Fest: The Hair Happenings

So V Festival 2011 has been and gone, did you go? I've never been to V Fest, always had it down as one of the "poppier" festivals which doesn't really appeal to me. However, the hair does. Of course!
Rihanna looked beautiful over the weekend (does this girl ever have an off day??) She rocked a larger curled look, with a braid on the left hand side to keep the curls off her face, then opted for a fuller, tighter curled 80's style. I really like Rihanna's hair colouring at the moment, taking inspiration from the ombre trend it looks more natural and really suits her.

Jessie J (complete with foot boot!) went from long & straight, to short & Purple in the space of two days (thank heavens for hair extensions eh!) I think the Madonnaesque ponytail is a little severe, but I love the Purple bob, complete with heavy Purple fringe. The colouring framed her face which I think is a great way to change your hair for maximum effect.

Dionne Bromfield worked a very pretty 60's style. Height at the crown and big curls swept over to the side suited her style and along with the era inspired make up made for a perfect look. This type of styling is really popular lately, and incredibly flattering for the wearer. I'd definitely cheat my way to long locks by using a hair piece or extensions if it looked this good.

Special mention to one guy at V Festival, Alex Turner of the Arctic Monkeys, step forward. I LOVE this look on men, I think his "retro" hair looks great, much better than the shaggy mop look he was sporting until recently. I'd love to see the sides shorter, but it's an improvement. Might have to convince Andy to start growing his hair...

Wouldn't it be nice to be able to have a stylist on hand for that festival fabulous look!

I've arrived home tired, but happy, after a lovely weekend in the West Country. Crystal (my sister), Vicki and I spent Saturday hoping to win big at Bath Races. Sadly I will have to return to work tomorrow but we all had a lovely time getting dressed up and being "ladies"
The girls had their own stylist on call to create some lovely curls and oversized buns. I even had time to continue my love for the jumbo braids and style my hair. Crystal & Vicki wore some lovely handmade fascinators to match their outfits, they both looked very glam! I let my braids do the talking.

I'd definitely recommend a day out at the races, and Bath racecourse is fantastic. After the racing finished, we watched some live music, and then enjoyed a huge firework display. And I even managed to get a bowl of Thai curry when I got home. Perfect!

Fearne Cotton, love her or not, she was rocking some seriously lovely looking hair at the Glamour Awards earlier this year.
Since getting her hair chopped into a long bob she's definitely not short on stylings, and the vintage style waves she wore are perfect. Sometimes having slightly shorter hair can help the wearer do more with it, as the longer the hair the more difficult it can be to style at times.

And she's not stopped at waves, stepping out in London recently, Fearne wore her bob straight, with a giant victory roll. Rather than wearing it swept off her face, the angle had been reversed and it looked fab. Slick of Red lippie and a bit of leather is all it took to give it a modern edge. I'm definitely going to give this look a go, it's perfect to keep hair looking stylish and great for a day to night transformation. What do you think?

Weleda - Pomegranate Regenerating Body Oil (£19.95)
This is amazing. I would never have thought of buying it but I'm so glad I've been able to try this. The smell is beautiful and it leaves your skin feeling gorgeous. Like you've had a massage at a fancy spa. I would definitely buy this again, and for the price I feel it's well worth it. A little goes a long way.

Ciate - Nail Enamel (£9)
I've tried Ciate nail enamel before, and I found it ok, nothing really amazing. The colour I received was Cabaret (I think!) and the application was good, it stayed chip free for a good few days. However I found Barry M to be just as hard wearing and better value wise.

Etat Libre - Eau de Parfum (£74)
Really lovely fragrance. Fresh and crisp and I would definitely look out for this again, the price is very daunting though. The sample size was perfect for tucking in my handbag for parties.

Illamasqua - Pure Pigment (£15.50)
Again I was very impressed with this product. As a newbie to Illamasqua I found the pure pigment beautiful on my eyes, and I've since worn it a few times and had compliments each time. This is an all rounder and can be mixed with other products or worn on it's own. Personally I've worn it on it's own.

Blink + Go - Ultimate effect strip Lashes (£8.95)

Sadly disappointed with these, the glue was shockingly bad and the lashes just didn't want to sit correctly. It's a shame as I love a false eyelash. I had Temptress lashes, so I can't comment on the others in the range. I'm very glad I've not paid £8.95 for them as I would have been very disappointed.

So, the products you get, would you repurchase? Some I would and it's great to have a "taster" of something I would never have thought of buying.Value for money wise I think GlossyBox are onto a winner, as it's an easy way to give new products a go. I think this would make a great gift for a friend, or for yourself, you might find something you like. At £12.95 a month it's definitely worth giving a go. Hair History...Nicola Roberts

I hate using the terminology of ugly duckling into a swan, but Nicola Roberts certainly has transformed into a stunning, amazingly haired lady lately. I can't help but think it's down to accepting her natural colouring, and realising if you are going to look different from your other bandmates, embrace it and totally rock the look.
Nicola started as a quiet, talented 16 year old winning a place in Girls Aloud, one of two bands formed from Popstar: The Rivals. Red hair, and pale, she stood out from the identikit look of the others, and was immediately labelled "the miserable one" (along with some other rather nasty terms!)

How different do they all look??

As the bands popularity grew, so did Nicola's image change. The hair become darker, then lighter, and she started trying out a tanned look.

Growing up in the spotlight must be tough, and trying out different looks is all part of finding your own image and being comfortable in your own skin. Looking through the pictures, it doesn't seem Nicola is comfortable. Being a natural Redhead will make you the envy of many these days, but Red wasn't always desirable and even Nic wanted to get rid.

As she got older and Girls Aloud became women with their own personalities and styles, Nicola kept it long. Trying out varied shades of Red, from strawberry blonde to a deep Auburn the length stayed the same and her natural skin tone shone.

Then came 2008, Nicola was 23, and started to really emerge as a stunning individual. The hair was shorter, the colour more vibrant and there was a confidence. I love the shorter look, heaps more volume and texture and it suits her face shape.

This photo taken around 2010 is gorgeous, I love the colouring and the styling is gorgeous. Such fluid curls and it has a great relaxed look with all the glamour to make it perfect red carpet hair. She looks happy and so comfortable.

More recently to launch a solo career, Nicola has jumped on the ombre train. I have to say, I'm not keen. I still love the styling and volume however I think the colouring lets her down. Maybe if this was a darker play on the ombre trend then it would work but it just feels Nicola's taken a step back towards wanting to "fit in" rather than stand out and embrace a more natural (and beautiful) look. I personally think she is a stunning girl and is willing to try out anything with regards to fashion and her look. Just bring back the ginge Nicola.

The Battle of the Argan Oils

Argan oil is everywhere at the moment, it's your new hair best friend, and Vo5 and Lee Stafford are the two main contenders battling for the top spot on the high street. So which one should you buy?...

*ding, ding, round 1*

Smelling fine, or worse than the Rhine?

As with all Lee Stafford products, you have a distinctive smell, which some love, some dislike. I personally love it. With Moroccan Oil the smell wasn't a positive, however Lee Stafford's Argan Oil smells terrific. It leaves your hair with a hint of fragrance which lasts all day. The Vo5 Miracle Concentrate Oil has quite a neutral smell, not offensive, but not a strong fragrance that stays with you.

Winner: Lee Stafford

Price is right, or way out of sight?

Moroccan Oil is expensive, however are the high street contenders giving us Argan Oil lovers a better price point?
Vo5 retails in the shops at a reasonable £4.99, for 50ml. Lee Stafford Argan Oil retails at a slightly more purse stinging £11.99, for 50ml. Now whilst Boots often do a 3 for 2 on the Lee Stafford range, I think the price is pretty high and more than most shoppers are willing to spend. A little product does go a long way in both cases though.

Winner: Vo5

Heavy or Light?

Argan oil is supposed to be incredibly light on the hair, not weighing it down and avoiding a lank look that no one wants.

I've used both oils fairly for a week (including using the same shampoo and styling methods) and have found of the two, Lee Stafford's left my hair feeling soft, manageable and light (using one pump of the oil) Vo5 unfortunately left my hair feeling slightly greasier than the norm a day after I had washed and applied. I found if I used two drops (which made the amount less than I'd used of the Lee Stafford Oil) then I didn't have a problem. My hair type is medium, below shoulder length, and highlighted. I do think however that using Vo5 on thick, coarse and curly hair would help control, unfortunately with my hair it seemed to weigh it down slightly until I found the right amount for me.

Winner: Lee Stafford

Packaging eye-catching or off-putting?

I can't help but be swayed by packaging. Unless I already know that something is brilliant, I take the look, application and wording on the packaging seriously.

Lee Stafford has gone for a burnt Orange and Pink theme, following his bright Pink signature look. I love that the bottle comes in a box, there is plenty of detail about the product, and the idea behind it. I love the Moroccan style pattern and the bottle itself looks good.

Vo5 have really set the standard application wise, I love the pipette idea, meaning you can get a controlled amount without wasting any, such a good idea and makes application that little bit more exciting - makes you feel like you are mixing and using your own potions (or maybe that's just me in a lab coat cackling wildly) The instructions and details are on a peel back label, and the bottle itself is average looking, and it's nice to be able to see the product clearly.

Winner: Vo5

You don't mind paying for something that is going to transform your hair, but if you are left feeling disappointed that a product hasn't lived up to it's promise then it's money wasted.

Both argan oils contain pretty much the same ingredients, give or take a few, so it would take something special to pay £7 more. I would splash out on Lee Stafford's Argan Oil or be more than happy to receive it as part of a gift, the smell is gorgeous and as always I love the packaging however the price for me lets it down which is a real shame. Vo5 have created something that is affordable and once you've figured out the exact amount that works for your hair, it's a good Argan Oil product. I'd probably say fancy a splurge, go for the Lee Stafford, got to save go for Vo5.

So the winner and champion Argan Oil product is the Vo5 Miracle Concentrate.
(I was given the Lee Stafford product & bought the Vo5 product for comparison purposes)

Vidal Sassoon: Changing the World with a Pair of Scissors

A style created in the 1960's and still worn today? Sharp, clean and flattering to the wearer, Vidal had a vision and created some amazing cuts that have inspired many a stylist to this day.

With clients such as Mary Quant, Mia Farrow and Jean Shrimpton, you know Vidal definitely had the vision and the passion. Vidal & his precision cutting are synonymous with the 60's.

I'm halfway through reading Vidal at the moment, and am looking forward to getting the DVD when it's released later this year. Did anyone manage to watch the film yet? Or have you read the book?

Mine's been filled with cider, laughter, and writing. Not too bad at all! As I haven't done one for a little while, I thought it was high time for a Sunday Snip, just to catch you up with all the hairy goings on, and to let you know what's coming soon on Hair Advice...

Celeb Hair of the Week
After hearing Rihanna's hair stylist apparently requests £2,000 a day (!) I thought it only fair that she got my celeb hair of the week. From flame Red ringlets, to vibrant victory rolls, Rhianna sure is getting her monies worth. What's your favourite Rihanna look?

Product of the Week
I've been sent a range of temp colours to have a play around with. From Red to Black, I can't wait to get spraying, I've currently got a striking streak of Pink in my hair as I was that keen to get colouring. Keep your eye out later in the week for more on these...

Handy Hint
Want beach waves quick? Spray with sea salt spray, then scrunch upwards and clamp random sections in your straightners to encourage the style to set. Wonderful waves in a instant.

Guess the Celeb?
This lady is no ugly duckling, and rather than being a Black sheep, she has more the grace of a swan. More recently she's enjoyed having friends with benefits. I bet she'd like to end up with a Family Guy though...

Rapunzel had it, we all want it!

Ever wondered why your hair grows? and how it grows? I loved studying the "science" side of hair and the different stages we encounter with our locks.

Your hair goes through three growth stages, Anagen, Catagen, Telogen and depending on when your hair reaches the stages, and how long it stays on the stage (anagen stage particularly) depends on how long your hair gets.

Anagen is the main growing stage, this can last from a few months to a few years.
Catagen is when the hair stops growing, and slowly starts to seperate.
The final stage is Telogen, where no growth occurs. This is the shortest stage lasting from a few hours to a few months. However if this stage continues, baldness occurs.

Obviously certain factors will affect your hair, the environment, chemicals and your health. Environment wise, living in a built up area will mean your hair is subject to pollution, and likewise living by the sea mean salt in the air has the same effect. Chemical wise, colouring your hair, along with perming/relaxing can subject your hair to all sorts of damage. Tints less so, with bleach coming higher up the damage chart. Finally your hair, I've often spoken of the fact you need a good diet full of nutrients to help give your hair the best start, it all comes from within. Products can help, and I've spoken about them in the past, but doing all you can to help your hair makes sense.

So, if your hair grows like a weed, blame your catagen stage for getting stuck.

And if it is stuck, I'm very jealous. :)

Bridal Hair: Annie

One of my most gorgeous friends Annie got married yesterday. As my present to her I gave her what I'm good at, hair styling. We'd had a few trials and on the day we were ready to create a glamorous look that would fit perfectly with her style and her big day.

There were 4 bridesmaids in total, her sister, friend, husbands niece and Annie's little girl. All looked beautiful and I was really happy with the styling. The bride went for a very natural but glamorous look, with hair tumbling over her shoulder, I styled her hair using Aussie hair products, Halo Hair Extensions and her hair accessories had been passed down from her big sister. The bridesmaids went for a gorgeous bun with height at the crown and curled strands to frame the face, simple but stunning, a few commented they looked rather Spainish both had dark hair so it worked really well.

I also managed to do mother of the bride, bride's brother's girlfriend and my friend (and lender of hair!) Kristie. Phew! And I had enough time to do mine! Not bad styling at all.
It was a glorious day and everyone had such a good time. It went far too quickly and before we knew it, it was over, we all had a catch up yesterday over drinks in the sunshine and today they are off on honeymoon.It made me really think about my wedding, and I got more than emotional a few times. Congratulations to the happy couple. :)

Every girl needs new shoes...

Evening you lovely bunch! It's my friend Annie's wedding this Friday, so with that in mind I went shopping for a frock...and ended up with one, and some shoes. Naturally. :)

I popped into Phase Eight expecting to fall in love with a dress that's WAY out of my price range and generally sulk. However when this beauty was found lurking in the rails I thought it'd be rude not to try it on. It fitted and as they say the rest is history. One thing to note is the dress cost £120. Originally. But I got it for £36 in the sale.

HOW INCREDIBLE IS THAT!!

I love the detailing on the bust and the straps are really unusual. It has a really "vintage" feel to it (I hate using that word to describe new things) but I feel like a screen siren in it. Add a era inspired hair do and I'm ready to go.

Along with these shoes for a flash of colour I think it's a perfect dress for a wedding. Now I just need to find a jewelled clip for my hair and I'm done.

I'll be taking lots of pics on the day, and as most of you know I'll be a busy hairstylist, doing 7 heads of hair on the day. So watch this space for how it went, pictures and I'm hoping a happy, sunny wedding day.

The Science behind your blow dry...

Regular readers will be fully aware that I have Hair Geek status, I totally accept the title and would really love a badge. The hair structure is an amazing thing, and it's great how we can manipulate it to become something else.

What makes a style? How does the blow dry stay put?

Well you have these bonds. The bonds are disulphide and weak salt, they hold together polypeptide chains alongside hydrogen bonds that prevent hair stretching too far.

When you blow dry, you are essentially breaking down these bonds to create new ones. This is why it's so important to leave the hair too cool before playing around with it. As the hair cools it hardens forming the a new bond. The bonds will stay put until it gets wet again, whether it be through washing, humid atmosphere or even a steamy bathroom.

The normal state of your hair without bonds being stretched and changed is called alpha-keratin. When you blow dry or set a style it becomes beta-keratin. The blow dry is all about tension to help encourage the hair structure to change and form the new pattern. Once the hair is in the desired style, leaving it too cool will not only help the hydrogen bonds harden, but it will give a longer lasting effect.
