Gripping Stuff!

A hair grip is a hair grip isn't it? Well, in a word, no. There is such a wide variety of grips and pins you can use, all helping to achieve a towering up do, or just hold a delicate plait in place in a mass of curls. So which is best for you and your style?

The Kirby aka The Bobby
This is the grip most of us use on a daily basis. The lynchpin in many a stylists kit. Use in a criss-cross pattern to really hold hair tight. And make sure the wavy bit is on the underneath when you pop it in your hair. Most make the mistake of using it upside down - try it, it really makes a difference.
Hersheson 'Pin Me Down'
I had my hair styled a little while back, and the stylist used these. If you have thick hair, and need something a little sturdier then I'd definitely recommend these. Pin up into the hair, then turn the grip to point down. My hair didn't budge, and I've stocked up with these for my kit. Very impressed. I picked mine up from ASOS, and they even come in a handy little tin.
The Wave Grip
This is rather like the Hersheson pin,but slightly more flexible. I usually use these for pinning looser more relaxed up do's. I follow the same up and down technique as when I use the Hersheson pins. The waved middle helps grip hair, and they are easily hidden in hair. Great for pinning curls.

And the grip rules...
  • With any hair grip, get rid as soon as they lose shape. No point in keeping a kirby that won't hold hair.
  • Spray with some hairspray before you pop in the hair, helps grip.
  • Always losing your hair grips? Grab a hair donut and stick them in to hold.
  • Business card holders make excellent hair pin holders. I always keep a couple in my Moo case for emergencies.

  2. I had no idea about using kirby grips that way round! Perhaps they'll actually stay in my hair if I start using them properly!

    1. Should help the grips stay put, if not whack a bit of hairspray or dry shampoo on them before putting in your hair. x

  4. People never believe me when I say there using the wonderful Kirby upside down also I've found when doing a hair up the pins aka the wave grip are great if you bend both end upward so it creates a v either side... My hair mentor taught me they hide well and grip even better.... Also I do the doughnut trick like a seamstress would her pins lol xxxx
