The Battle of the Hairsprays

You've got your frock on, you've done your hair but by the time you get to the party it's looking like you've rolled out of a hedge after a night in a sweaty nightclub...sound familiar?

I recently purchased two hairsprays (both on 1/3 off in Sainsbury, beauty budget mecca!) Aussie Hi-Shine & Hi-Hold and L'Oreal Elnett Cheryl hairspray. Ranging from £3.50 to £5.50 in price.

So which one won the battle and will be crowned Ultimate hairspray. Read on to find out...

Holding Up
Let's face it we don't buy a hairspray for it not to hold our hair in the style we want.
I've found pros and cons in both sprays I tested. Whilst the Aussie hairspray really holds the hair in place I found it left it quite crispy if concentrated on a certain area.
The Elnett spray seemed a finer mist so felt light and whilst holding the hair it didn't have the strong hold that Aussie gave.
Winner: Aussie

Shine on
Both promise shine. Whilst Elnett talk of Diamond Shine, Aussie promise us Hi-Shine. So which ones does what it says. Well as I mentioned the Aussie spray tends to go a bit crispy, so this tends to make the hair look rather matte. Elnett on the other hand is a finer mist so ensures a more even distribution and softer look. I found Elnett left my hair with more shine, and when wearing my hair up it seemed to reflect the light.
Winner: Elnett

Smell & Taste
Ever got hairspray in your mouth when spraying. I have. Many a time. Goes with the job I suppose!
The smell of a hairspray can make or break it for me. I've used countless brands in the past and found they left a really horrible smell that got down my nose, throat and just wasn't very nice.
The Aussie spray has a lovely smell, as with all Aussie products.  The Elnett spray had the typical hairspray smell and made me sneeze quite a bit! It hasn't changed over the years as the smell also reminded me of my nan spraying her set when I was younger.
Winner: Aussie

Brushability
End of the night, go to brush your hair and hit a knot, then another, then another. Not cool.
When brushing the hairspray out of my hair after a day of wear I found one clear winner.
One I could brush out without an "ouch" muttered. My brush glided through and I was left with no residue or flaking. The other however was quite difficult to brush out, and it took some delicate and gentle brushing to avoid some hair shedding! However there was no residue or flaking left behind.
Winner: Elnett

Well the votes have been counted and verified and I can announce the winner is *dramatic pause...drumroll*
IT'S A DRAW!!
Both hairsprays have pros and cons, and both in my mind do different jobs.
If you are after shine and medium hold, then it's the Elnett for you. This would be great for curls and wearing your hair down but still needing some hold. The shine is great and for more relaxed looks it'd do the job. The Aussie spray is the top for up do's and styles that need a little more structure. The hold is far superior however the shine is lesser. I'd be happy using the Aussie spray for wedding hair when it needs a bit more hold to last the day.
What's your favourite hairspray? Do you pick up what's on offer or are you loyal to one brand?
If you'd like me to battle more products then let me know...it's on!! :)

  1. I'm ashamed to admit that I use Elnett every day. I have serious guilt at using L'Oreal products, given their evilness to animals, but I've never met a hairspray that could handle my hair like it can - oh shameful vanity! Is the Aussie on bunny friendly, do you know?

  2. Hi Niki!
Aussie is indeed bunny friendly. All Aussie products are. It's a shame L'Oreal still use such horrible methods of testing.

  3. Great comparison! I've used Elnett in the past and really liked it - it's definitely the classic hairspray. I'm currently using a Charles Worthington hairspray which is ok, I'll probably go back to Elnett once I've finished it though. x

  4. Great review. Since getting my aussie one, I have re purchased as I think the smell is lovely + It holds well. Personally for me I don't care overally for shine (but it is nice) and also I haven't felt the aussie is bad to brush your hair out the next day!
Its a must have for me now xx

  5. Being lack-of-products-girl, the only one I've got is a Brilliant Brunette one. I barely use it and I've got nothing to compare it to so I don't know if it's good or not! It seems to work though and my hair loves the rest of their products.

  9. Great review, Kel! I don't use hairspray but if I was looking for one I'd probably gravitate towards the Aussie, firstly because I tend to avoid L'Oreal products and also the packaging on the Elnett is soooo tacky. xxx
